What other parts should be changed when changing a timing belt?

i have a 97 toyota camry v6, the camshaft/crankshaft pulley came off the block and grinded its way out of the housing on the side of the engine. i suspect the pulley and belt need to be changed...obviously. what else need to be changed (e.g. water pump, idler, etc.)?

Change both the balancer belt and timing belt and the tensioners for both belts every time. Sounds like your car is on its second belt change (or first). You may not need to change the water pump. If the second, you should consider swapping out the adjusters and seals. Talk to the parts guys and see what they recommend, also. You have an interference engine, so you probably have engine damage (bent rods) unless you are lucky. Since the pulley came off, you need to check it and everything around it. Replacements you can do yourself, but the damage should be checked by mechanics or at your dealer.

anything that moves or spins wears out eventually.

anything that requires timing belt/chain cover to be removed in order to be replaced that is replaced now is very unlikely to trouble you again until the next timing belt is due.

do you NEED to?

possibly not. but you will kick yourself if that changes anytime soon.
I'm not familiar with your particular engine. If it's a zero clearance engine major problems can occur if it jumps timing. For example: if one of the valves is still open when the piston comes up it strikes the valve possibly causing valve, head,or piston damage.
Tension Pulley %26amp; Water Pump, Check for %26quot;Shaft Damage%26quot; where you say the Pulley(s) came off. If this happened a Speed also Check for Damaged Valves.
I checked here for you...

it is not an interference engine so the damage should be limited to just what got broke at the belt.

You should know that you will have to follow the procedure to line up the timing marks, it was pretty difficult on a '91. Water pump is recommended.

If it was a big pulley, it's the crank, if small it's the cam pulley, you know it could also be your water pump pulley. Look at it closely if you're doing the work.
Hi you should really see if it snapped and cracked your engine or water cooler (radiator) or evn where your ac is. A timing belt can cause a LOT of problems! Getting your garage to do an assessment which is usually around $100 or a % of what your bill is--is a good idea to make sure nothing else is wrong.
You sure you really want to do this yourself? You should change both the crankshaft and camsaft timing gears, tensioner, timing belt, water pump, upper and lower radiator hoses and any other hoses that seem old, flush the radiator and serpentine belt. You should also inspect the crankshaft and camshaft for nicks or other damage to the shafts and have the cylinders heads inspected for damage to the lifters or valves. I seriously doubt they are any good though.
Water pump and you may have bent a valve.
