Changing the timing belt on %26quot;flat 4's%26quot; requires a certain procedure. Do not attempt it unless you have the service manual or you could do some serious damage.

i own a repair shop, and you have to line all three of them up with the little point marked on the head, there's an arrow that you line them up with,,i got better idea you need to go purchase a Haynes repair manual and it will have a clear picture of what your doing because the belts will slip while your putting them on ,this way you,ll have a Clear diagram of what it is supposed to look like when you get it on,and advance auto parts will have the book, and it will help you on other things you may want to do the car later on,good luck i hope this help,s.

I don't think the arrows are used for the timing belt, but go and ask. My '96 Legacy 2.2 has notches in the plastic belt cover that the cams marks line up to, and a mark on one of the crank tabs that line up on the mark just over the top of the crank gear.

New belts are usually marked anyway, and once you get the crankshaft timing marks lined up and the middle mark on the belt lined up with that, the cam marks should fall on the other two lines on the belt.
