Does the timing belt have to be changed on a 2004 Hyundai Sante Fe ?

My girlfriends son just bought a 2004 Sante Fe with 100k miles on it. Should he have the timing belt changed if it has not been done? Is there anything else he should be aware of?

Most defiantly and as soon as you can. They are due to be replaced every 48 months or 60k which ever comes first. after that they tend to get brittle and if it breaks it can cause engine damage. If it is a 2.7L or 3.5L there is only one belt. If it is a 2.4L there is also a balance shaft belt that should be changed as well. I would also say to replace the crank shaft position sensor with the 2.4L as the tend to go out at this mileage and the timing belt has to be removed to change it. In all cases I would also say change the water pump. as they tend to leak at around 100K and the timing belt has to come off for that service too.
