Any tips on changing the timing belt on a V 6 - 1998 Toyota Camry?

For basic instructions, refer to a service manual. Here are some additional hints that are usually not included:

1. Get a factory belt. It has paint marks on it so it is easier to see. The rear cam gear cannot be viewed directly and getting the timing right can be difficult. Use a small mirror for greater confidence.

2. This engine uses an auto tensioner, so you'll need to set up the belt slightly advanced on the cams because the tensioner will pull it back when it is tightened.

3. It is possible to remove the dogbone bracket from the car without lifting the engine. In fact, you will not need to lift the engine at all for this entire job.

Please don't do this without a car repair manual. Thats the best advice I can give you. Also the manual will let you know what parts are good to replace while you are changing the belt.
it's not too bad. it is not an interference engine, meaning you won't bend valves if you move the crank or cams with the belt off. it's usually hard to loosen the bolt on the crank pulley. you'll need a strong impact wrench and lots of air pressure. i also reccomend a factory repair manual. it cost more than a mitchell or chilton, but it's worth it if you are going to keep the car for a while.
Mark the position of the cams and crankshaft before taking off the cambelt.

Do whatever it takes to prevent the crankshaft and cams for turning while the belt is off.

I don't know if it has an automatic tensioner, but if it doesn't make sure the tension is right (on the longer side, you have to be able to twist the cambelt up to 90 degrees and half an inch of play if you press it with your thumb)

Good luck
set all your marks befor you remove the belt and if you have an air compressure its the best thing to use but a trick i have learned at the dealership is take a good breaker bar with a socket that fits well and just turn the car over an it will losen the blt with out breakng it but use a puller to pull the pully off if not 2 pry bars i could go on for ever telling you how to do it if ou wnted but this is just some of the steps
