I have a 2002 Monterro Sport, with a recommended timing belt change at 60,000 miles - not cheap to do. I now have 59,000 miles. What's the potential downside of postponing the change 10 or 20,000 miles ?

chances are, you'll be fine. But if it does go, your valvetrain and/or piston heads will most likely be destroyed, which is much more expensive. I wouldn't push it much after 70,000 miles, if the car is valuable. And often it's not all that expensive to replace, depending on what is expensive to you.

The parts required for the job are actually pretty cheap. Get inspired and do the job yourself!!!! Get a Haynes manual and follow it like a cook book. You will need some tools (metric). Start by power washing your engine bay with GUNK Orange. You will be able to see things more clearly, and it will make the chore easier since your ahnds will stay cleaner longer. You can also go to the ALLDATA data base. Many libraries have this. The precedures are all there. DON'T wait too long!!!!! Disaster will rear it's hideous head!!!
The downside is the belt breaks at hi RPM bending valves into the pistons.
