When do you have to change the timing belt on a 2005 PT Cruiser?

I have a 2005 PT Cruiser with 67K miles. Wondering when I should change the timing belt so it does not break on the road. I usually drive by myself, so want to make sure it is safe.

Normally that means the engine uses a chain. However, I am also finding parts listings on-line for timing belts for the 2.4L engine that are for 2001-2009. Danger, Will Robinson! I assume you mean it is an Integra DC2. That is an ambitious job at best. If you have access to a manly impact wrench (500 ft-lb minimum) to loosen the crank bolt the rest is fairly simple, if labor intensive. I allow a day to change a Honda/Acura timing belt because of the potential for things going pear-shaped, and to take the time pressure off. Access is not good and it is normally advised to remove the driver's side engine mount (along with moving accessories on that side) for access. Honda vehicles are like onions (or ogres) - they are in layers, and removing the outer layers is the trick to having room to work.



The crank bolt deserves some consideration, for it is a worthy opponent. My 500 ft-lb impact wrench requires the pressure regulator be put right at the inlet of the driver, and even then it struggles a bit. The damper needs one of the two types of holders to hold it during re-torquing. See the sources for more.



The water pump should be changed when the timing belt is off. The tensioner really should be changed, too.

I have seen belts that require removing an engine mount to change. They are impossible to change without equipment to support the engine. I have seen others I could change in under 5 minutes without tools. I am not familiar with your vehicle.
I have no idea what a DC2 is.

Knowing the exact year, make, model, and engine trim of her car might help.



I've only done one timing belt, and that was on a Ford Contour with a Zetec engine. That sucked bigtime. No clearance to get the water pump pulley off, they kept changing the engine so the guides were only half-true, timing marks are impossible to line up (tiny notch must be lined up to a mark three inches back, and camshafts require a special tool), motor mount had to be removed (not as bad as the first guy said, you would just use a jack and a 2x4 to hold the engine up).



Belt shredded again later because of an undiagnosed tensioner problem... took an afternoon to fix again.



But then again, Fords are impossible to work on

    If I where you I would at least purchase the tensioner and then compare it to your tensioner and if it seems even a little bit sloppy or worn I would replace it. If you think its ok you can just return it after the job is done. Also dont forget to replace the waterpump while your at it unless you want to tear it back down before you know it.
    Get a timing belt kit which comes with the timing belt,all idler pulley and tensioner.Maybe change the cam and crank seals to prevent oil leak later on,and water pump too.
    Because of the wear and tear on the timing belt tensioner I recommend changing the tensioner

    I know someone who says he has never had his timing belt changed on any of his cars, and that they have never broken on him, even after 200,000+ miles. He thinks the car manufacturers recommend they be changed to help their dealers make $$$. Has anyone else just ignored the recommendations to have it changed?

    That is a double edged sword actually.. Ive had cars that have hit the 300k mark with the original timing belt/chain.. then again Ive had other cars that have snapped the belt in a little under 100k... theres no concrete way to say %26quot;it'll never snap%26quot; your friend is lucky, that is all. I usually tend to inspect the chain when I first buy a vehicle and around every 50k after that.

    Its always good to change one thats going bad *stretching chain, brittle belt ect ect* so to a degree its not a dealer ploy to make money if your only getting it done once every 3-5 years or so. Its just preventive maintanence to insure no problems arrise

    The reason that thy say change the belt is it striches. The cam and engine have to be in time with each other as when the belts striches it will loose power. If that is what he says then I say ( as a mechanic) he is jut lucke but foolish and a dumb ***.

    Well, first off, the comment that has already posted about major engine damage can occur is not really true.... Unless you drive a mid 80's Ford escort with a interference motor...... Meaning when the timing belt goes....the valves stay open, and the piston smacks them.........This is not a common thing that happens as for auto makers would be in hot water over that .... Most manufacturers suggest around 60000 miles for you to change them.... now , its not unheard of to run them into the 200000 mile area..... but think about this....do you want to maintain your car on your terms, or have it go bad on its terms when you need it the most.........time to roll the dice...by the way.....I have only had one car with a timing belt......and it broke at 85000 miles.... not causing damage...just greif..... I now only drive trucks and typically they have timing chains..... one actually had timing gears...

    Your timing belt should be changed AT LEAST every 100K (60K for some cars) If you can't remember or don't know when it was last changed, have it done ASAP. They are a huge pain in the butt to fix if it breaks.
    If the timing belt has never been changed then yes it does need it now. Timing belts usually get changed every 60-100,000 miles. Have you checked your accessory belts? One could be loose which would cause a squeeling noise. If the belts are as old as the car they should be replaced as well.

    Timing belts are toothed belts and will never squeal. The squeal if from another belt like the alternator belt. Timing belts have no symptoms that they need replacement, they simply break. Now on toyotas, like my 94, the engine is non interference so if the belt breaks the engine simply quits and you get a tow. Better check on the 92 to make sure it is like that, if not then when the belt breaks the pistons slam against the valves and time for a new car. If you have never replaced it, you are working on borrowed time. Also if you have it done replace the water pump at the same time since it is driven by the timing belt and it is the cheapest time to replace it.
    It could be any belt that is making the squealing noise. If you haven't changed the timing belt, you better do so now. They need to be changed every 80,000 miles or so. When it breaks you're stuck. Been there!
    the chances are that its the fan belt thats squeeling, if its the timing belt and it goes in a toyota, plan on spending lots of money on repairs to get it working properly again, better to take it to a dealer -trusted mechanic and have it checked out/ replaced before you get into uncharted trouble. a little preventive maintainance goes a looong way, and they never fail at the best possible moment in your life.
    You can only tell about the timing belt when it quits and ruins the engine, so if it has over 100K on the odometer it needs to be changed. Not doing it will leave you stranded somewhere.

    The squeeling you are hearing is the alternator/AC belt.
    check the condition of the t-belt. count the cracks in it. if you lose count while counting then it is time to replace it. or when in bought rip it out and change it.

    The belt should be changed at the normal intervals in your service manual. As far as the hoses, they shouldn't need changing, but it also depends on what weather conditions the car has been through.

    I wouldn't. The quality of the hoses and belts on those cars is tip-top. I'd wait until the recommended service interval for the timing belt and only replace the hoses as needed. The new rubber compounds are capable of lasting for a very long time.

    Because the timing belt is encased in a housing, it's not subjected to your water, oil, air and such as the accessory belts let's say.



    The dealer will want to replace at 60K, it's rated for 100K, some have gone over 150K (not recommended) on them. I'd say change at 100K would be sufficient.

    You need to get the passenger side front tire off, take off the plastic wheel liner in the wheel well, take off all of your pulleys and accesories for example; ac compressor, power steering pump, alternator, take off the front main seal, the belt is accessible there.



    Make it a lot easier on your self and go to autozone and get a Haynes Repair Manual for your car, they're only 10 or 15 bucks and will tell you step by step what to do.

    This is the intervals at which the belt should be replaced I am assuming it is a 2.0 litre; On 1993鈥?7 Probe, replace at 60,000 mile intervals. On 1999鈥?004 models, inspect every 120,000 miles %26amp; replace as required..

    1.Disconnect battery ground cable, then isolate cable end with electrical tape.

    2.Remove cylinder head valve cover.

    3.Remove power steering pump belt shield, then loosen adjusting bolt.

    4.Loosen lock bolt and power steering pump through bolt, then remove power steering belt.

    5Loosen alternator adjusting bolt and alternator upper mounting bolt, then remove alternator belt.

    6.Support engine using three bar engine support No. 014-00750 or equivalent.

    7.Using suitable jack, raise engine slightly and remove right hand engine mount.

    8.Remove timing belt upper cover.

    9.Raise and support vehicle, then remove splash shields.

    10..Using crankshaft pulley holder T92C-6316-AH or equivalent, remove crankshaft pulley attaching bolt.

    11.Remove crankshaft pulley, sprocket and guide plate.

    12.Remove timing belt lower cover bolts, then the cover.

    13.temporarily install crankshaft pulley attaching bolt.



















    14.Turn crankshaft until timing mark on crankshaft sprocket lines up with timing mark on oil pump and camshaft sprocket timing marks (E and I) line up as shown.















    15.Lower vehicle and insert camshaft pulley holding tool T92C-6256-AH or equivalent.

    16.Use an allen wrench to turn timing belt tensioner and remove timing belt tensioner spring from hook pin.

    17.Remove timing belt. NOTE : If reusing old timing belt, mark direction of belt for installation reference.

    18.Reverse procedure to install, ensuring all timing marks are aligned.

    This is a pretty involved operation depending on your skill level, but i am a firm believer that a woman can do anything a man can do!!! :) I tried to paste in the alignment marks but couldn't (keep in mind that this is a interference engine- This means if you don't get the timing properly aligned and you crank the engine over there is a possibility that you can bend your valves (damage the engine internally)

    Go back to square one in the repair manual. The timing belt is not lined up properly.

    Get that belt done! Toyota and Honda are the biggest timing belt offenders, but here's the difference. You blow the timing belt on your Toyota, you get towed to the shop and pay for a timing belt replacement. You blow the timing belt on your Honda, you ruin your pistons and valves, so now you're either replacing much of the engine or getting a junkyard engine. The Honda's have what is called an interference engine, which means the pistons crash upward into the heads, damaging internal engine components, the Toyota has a non-interference engine, so the piston stops short of damaging everything. If you completely baby the car while driving, try to keep it running when possible to avoid starting it, and get the freaking timing belt done ASAP, you should be OK, but since its inside the engine, there's no way to know. You might be hanging on by a thread right now or the belt may appear fine. Just get it done, get it done, get it done!!!

    It's not dangerous as in the engine is going to explode and kill everybody in the car, but the old timing belt could snap and the engine could stop running at any time. If that happens, the repair bill could for more than just a belt and water pump. If you don't need to drive the car, I'd recommend you wait until you could get the proper maintenance done on it.
    Please be careful. I would highly encourage you to get the timing belt replaced ASAP. We own a 1992 Accord with 223K miles. It already had the timing belt changed out once before. We just recently replaced the timing belt yet again, as well as the water pump, belt, etc. Our car is running well right now. If the belt in your Honda breaks, it will cause major damage to the engine. Please do not drive it until you can get it repaired. If you must drive it, drive it gently until you can get it fixed.     you should be fine until you have enough cash, its actually smarter to do the water pump with timing belt... so yeah its a 2000, not like its a 1994. just drive in the city so that if the timing belt does snap, stop the car!!! so that the engine parts inside dont get f**ked up.

    The thing you will have the most chance of screwing up is installing the balance belt. Before removing the timing belt you should have all the crankshaft and cam gear timing marks lined up. This does not guarantee that the balance shaft is aligned. Once you have the old balance belt off, you need to spin the small gear on the right side. It has an arrow and notch in the gear that line up at the 11 o'clock position. When you spin the gear by hand it should self center toward the 11 o'clock position, not at the 5 or 7 o'clock positions. Just spin it clockwise until it centers at 11o'clock. It's the one thing mechanics not familiar with Mitsubishi's miss and it gives you a real shaky idle and low rpm.

    If you have over 70,000 miles on the motor, replace the water pump and all the pulleys including the balance belt tension pulley.

    It depends on how many miles you have on the truck. If you have a repair manual you can look to see what the recommended mileage is to have these items replaced.
    yeah. if timing belt breaks, you got some serious issues. And transmission fluid needs to be changed to maintain the life of the transmission.
    The unusal part is a Ranger lasting 10yrs. Your question depends on the type of engine ford uses. This will determine what will happen when the belt breaks, either the engine will simply quit (good thing) or the pistons will slam and bend your valves all to hell (bad). In the second case a new engine will fix it. I would spend the money to get the belt replaced.
    I think it's a pretty good idea to get your timing belt changed. I don't know how many miles you've run on it, or how hard you've driven it, but to be safe it should be changed around 80K miles or 7-8 years, whichever is earlier. You're already past those milestones so it's probably a good idea to change it now.



    Also replace the water pump at the same time, because it is easily accessible when the timing belt is replaced and because it will also fail around the same time.



    Your car is a manual shift, so it uses a set of gears to shift, rather than transmission fluid, which is used in automatic transmissions, so it doesn't apply in your case. However, you should probably check to see if your clutch pads are still OK.
    If the engine has more than 100K miles than change it ASAP. If the belt breaks you'll bend the valves and ruin the engine. When you do the work, have the water pump changed as the timing cover and belt need to be removed to change it anyway.

    I don't think the Ford, 1996 has a %26quot;timing belt%26quot;, I believe they have a %26quot;timing chain and sprockets%26quot;.

    And manual transmissions do not have the problems with oil changes and filters of an automatic tranny, so as log as fluid, or grease level is correct, not too much to worry about.

    Anyone saying to change the timing belt, doesn;t know anything about the Ford engines, as only those engines that have overhead cams use a timing belt, and Ford %26quot;V%26quot; engines are not overhead cams.
    If it does have a timing chain your ok. Timing chains last longer than belts, they just stretch a little. You'll know when it stretches.
    That engine does not have a timing belt, it has a timing chain. No need to peroidically change it as it should last as long as the rest of the engine. I'd say that it is due for a tranny oil change though.
    Your '96 Ranger 4.0 has a timing chain, not a belt. There is no service needed. However, the transmission does not use gear oil, it uses Mercon, which is automatic trans fluid, and will break down much more easily than gear oil would. I would get the manual transmission serviced at your next oil change interval. Actually, Ford now recommends Mercon V for your transmission, so be sure thats what you put in it.

    I do belive your 4.0 has a timing CHAIN and depending on how you drive it is time to think about getting it changed.I don't know about the V-6's but the 2.3 4 banger is a non interference engine,meaning the valves won't contact the pistons in case the timing belt does break.(it's a belt in the 2.3) found that out when I broke mine at around 200,000,but deffinatley change the tranny and rear end fluid.I belive they both take regular ATF,my 99 does
    I agree with the other person's answer, it all depends on the mileage...most manufacturers recommend having the timing belt replaced after 60,000 miles. If you have the owner's manual it should be listed in there as well as the recommended schedule of changing the fluid in your manual trans. You said the truck was bought used, if you aren't good friends with the previous owner...you have no idea what tortures it was put through. Is it a 4x4? It's always a good preventative measure o change the fluid in both the trans and transfer case.

    When should I get my timing belt changed?

    I have a 2003 Hyundai Elantra. Bought it when it had 106k miles on. Do not know if they ever changed the timing belt %26amp; I am now up to 145k miles on it. When am I suppose to get that changed??



    I can't find anything on the web about when I am suppose to get it changed. %26amp; I am worried it may break %26amp; ruin my engine soon.

    That belt should be be done every 90,000 miles along with the water pump. so it probably wouldn't hurt to change it soon.
    I'd have it changed and then replaced again around 200,000 miles or so.

    first make sure your car has a belt and not a chain. $400 sounds normal but high TO ME. I can find a shop to do it for maybe $250. Keep shopping around. Given how/ what you have said I doubt u have the knowledge to do the job yourself. Bit complex for the average joe and requires full tool set and torque wrench.

    They'll probably also change the water pump which is usually done.

    ps- if u have a timing chain u can hold out for 35k more miles.

    pss- requires timing belt, water pump and corresponding gaskets.

    That depends on the car. On a '91 Toyota Camry, they changed just the timing belt last year and now this year we have to change the water pump which was uncovered when changing the timing belt. They SHOULD have changed the water pump because the car had 225,000 miles.

    They didn't so now we have to.

    Look up how to do your car and if it's the transverse engine, it probably should have everything that gets unbolted and is hard to get to, changed.
    please don't do it yourself. if you get it a tooth out it will run terrible and you'll have to tear it back down. but do have it changed. depending on the vehicle if the belt breaks, which at 100000 you're flirting with disaster, it can bend valves and/or bust pistons. it also depends on the vehicle how much labor is involved. that sounds reasonable and i have done alot of them that cost that much. you may also need idler or tensioner pulleys if they get in there and find some bad, which is normal. also if the water pump runs off the timing belt it is sometimes a good idea to go ahead and replace that also and save some labor. that is if it's questionable.

    The belts themselves are cheap: $50 or less. Getting to them, however, takes a couple of hours of work, and that's if you've done this procedure several times and can practically do it in your sleep. Most of us aren't so skilled. I know I'm not.



    At the very least, they'll check the timing before they reinstall everything, and check the tension on the belt.



    You shouldn't have to do this more than every five years or so; just bite the bullet and try to smile. Or think of what will happen if the belt breaks.     I have a 99 Acura Integra LS with 101,000 on it. Some repair shops say that they go ahead and change the other belts while others don't. Is this a necessary procedure?     The reason you want change the belts is you are already in there with everything apart. Makes sense to start with new everything after the repair. Necessary? No. Prudent? Defiantly!

    Your timing belt is the most sturdy belt of all. If you haven't replace the other belts recently, and your timing belt needs change, the other belts sure need to be replaced. is better to change them now than risk a belt failure.

    u dont have to replace the external belts when u do a timming belt service but u should...by 100k there well cracked and warn...no sence in gettin stuck by a broke belt when u could of had them replaced in time...as for where to get it done....your acura is an interference engine so i would much recommend taking it to a dealer...for the simple fact that if they replace the belt and dont get it right it will ruin the engine....yes the dealer cost more usually but they are trained and have done many of them.

    All non interference means is that if it snaps, it PROBABLY wont damage the cylinder heads and valves.



    You still need to re-time all the valves and do a compression check on the engine.



    It would be better for you to change the belt now instead of when it breaks, if it breaks while driving the car will instantly die, then you will need a tow, then you hope the shreading of the belt doesnt damage any of the pullys it runs.

    One some cars the design is non-interference design. But I would not wait till it brakes as you would be stuck paying the mechanic whatever he calls. On top of that you will be stuck on the road and paying for the tow.



    As long as you can drive the car you can go to the better priced mechanic. Beside you only replace the timing belt once or twice before selling it. Why wait?



    That is why they don't make too many non-interference designs anymore.

    yes that is correct however some of the later models are chain driven since 1998 so no need to change what is not there
    The belt should be changed at the recommended intervals. As far as weather or not it is an interference fit engine or not, I'm not positive, but even if it is non interference, that is no excuse to not perform preventative maintenance. If the guy is willing to be cheap about something that important, how often do you think he has the oil changed, trans. serviced, or any other service that should have been performed.
    I would go ahead and have the belt changed because you can never be too safe about these kind of things especially when considering how much more the repair can cost if something does actually go wrong...

    you should go to your libary and get a manual on the car. MAKE SURE u line up the timeing and set it right. even a little off will bend the valves and ruin the engine.

Timing belt replacement is one of the tough ones. $ 500 to replace the belt its too much Labor should not exceed $ 300 with LTS (Labor Time Standard Guide - Mitchell Book) allowing 2.4 hr to replace the belt. Multiply that by shop hourly rate and that should be your labor dollars to pay. You can negotiate the price or choose a different shop. Its worth to let a qualified technician to replace the belt for you. Like the previous guy said, one wrong move and with first crank on the engine and you will be seeking for major repairs.

    You need to remember a few things when doing a cam belt. Mainly, if you cock it up you car is dead as there is no clearance between the valve and the pistons. In the first stroke you'll bemd the valves if you too far advanced. My company has just invested 拢3000 in a cam belt locking tool set. (massive thing it is lol) you might even find you need to buy a sprocket locking set which is very expensive. lay off the dealer, in my garage i'd charge 拢260 for that. just make sure where ever you go they will give you warranty. Plus that price is prob belt only, you'll be wanting to do the tensioner as well, get a price on that then the $500 will seem a bit more value for money.

    I have been a mechanic for many years and believe that I know what I am doing when I go about doing things like changing a timing belt. I just put a timing belt on this 99 Neon that has a 2.0 SOHC engine that a man stated that the timing belt broke while sitting still. I really believe that the new timing timing belt that I put on is lined up correctly. I have done this a few times before on a Neon. When I crank the car, it runs really, really loud and rough if I hold my foot on the gas and it will not idle. Can anyone offer any advice? Thank you.

    if the car was running when it broke you will need to do a valve job, only because the 2 liter neon motor is what is call an interference motor, meaning that the pistons and valves come within millimeters of each other during operation. So when the timing belt goes it smashed the valves into the head, causing ruff running conditions or no idle

    Yep, 60,000 is overdue, not a big job, but should be done by a professional.

    That's a load of crap. Honestly..... I've seen timing belts last over 150k miles no problem. I'd still change it at around 100k miles just to be safe.- and NO that guy who said you need a new engine if the belt breaks is obviously smoking crack and knows zippo about cars.

    And for the guy above the ES300 and IS300 do not have the same engine. The ES uses a 1MZFE V6 from the Camry V6, Sienna, Avalon, Solara, RX300 and Highlander. While the IS300 uses a 2JZGE VVT-i I6 from the SC300, GS300, and Toyota Supra. These are two COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ENGINES
    If you want to play it safe, change the timing belt at 60,000 miles. If it breaks, it will not damage your engine. I repeat, it will not. Your engine will stop and you will need to have it towed. The only way to tell if your car needs a new timing belt is by a visual inspection your mechanic can do. Our 1994 ES 300 had about 150,000 miles on the original timing belt. It didn't break, but we felt we were pushing our luck, so we had it changed with the water pump. Our car was totalled in an accident with 236,000 miles and was on the second timing belt.



    You need to decide how important it is for preventative measures. If you cannot lose time with a breakdown, then spend the money and do it now. I use the same rationale for brake work. Some people want their brakes changed if there is only 10,000 miles left, while other want to run them down to the wear indicators. It all depends on you.

    EDIT: Since you it ran before the water pump change did you align the timing marks before you took off the old belt? If so then you should be in good shape. If you moved the cams and crank after you removed the belt then you may bent the valves while aligning the timing marks.



    Does the engine turn as you engage the starter motor? Might have some one verify that the motor is turning for if not then the starter picked a bad time to go bad.



    The alternator connection should not matter for it can run with the alternator not charging, though not for long.



    Are all the other engine sensors including the cam and/or crank sensors connected? The engine needs them in order to know when to fire the injectors and spark plugs.

    timing could be off. to start the car you need spark, fuel, compression, and timing. seeing that you just changed the timing, it was probably done wrong. if your timing belt broke and thats the reason you changed it, then you probably threw a rod
    I think that's what's called an %26quot;interference engine%26quot; and the valves hit the top of the pistons when your belt broke.



    You may need a new engine.

    Not sure on your car, but on a lot of cars the timing belt, or belts must be removed to change the water pump. So if you do not change it and the water pump goes out, then the timing belt has to come off again, so the labor price will be as much as it was for changing the timing belt. If the car is of the age where the timing belt needs replacing, then the water pump is also about that age. The labor price should not be much more, than just having the timing belt done. It will cost extra for the pump.

    The parts aren't that expensive and it saves you another trip into the engine between belt changes.

    When you do the water pump make sure you get ALL the old gasket off. Some are a bear to get at. You don't want to discover you have a leak after you get it all back together.

Been a shadetree mechanic and if you dont trust the mechanic ask for the parts when you pick up the car or mark them permantly before the repair and check in his parking lot that they are replaced. Also never put on the work ticket the parts that are bad, only state the problem your having. Otherwise the mechanic can refer to the ticket and said I replaced the parts you wanted !!! and you still have the problem you started with. Find a good and honest mechanic and stick with him for the life of the vehicle

    All of the belt driven accessories at the front of the engine and the timing chain cover will have to be removed. Depending on the mechanic, since this is very labour intensive, this could be several hundered dollars. Expect to pay around five hundred for parts and labour, at minimum.

    First mistake is you went to a body shop. You should have gone to a mechanic. You can't just look at a timing belt without removing the cover and a few other item's (to gain access). I'm a firm believer if it ain't broke don't fix it. If you car start's ok leave it alone.     Pull the timing cover off and look at the belt teeth and look at the back of the belt to determine if it looks old and dry. Move the belt in and out to see how much play it has. You need to have experience to determine what you observe. If you have never checked a timing belt before have an experienced mechanic check it out. I'd replace the pulleys and waterpump while you're at it with the mileage you are at.
    I would check and see if the belt looks excessively worn or if you are able to see the chords it would need to be changed immediately. Around 100,000 miles most people get the belts changed as if you dont it does sometimes cause serious problems to the motor if it goes out while the car is running.

    Most defiantly and as soon as you can. They are due to be replaced every 48 months or 60k which ever comes first. after that they tend to get brittle and if it breaks it can cause engine damage. If it is a 2.7L or 3.5L there is only one belt. If it is a 2.4L there is also a balance shaft belt that should be changed as well. I would also say to replace the crank shaft position sensor with the 2.4L as the tend to go out at this mileage and the timing belt has to be removed to change it. In all cases I would also say change the water pump. as they tend to leak at around 100K and the timing belt has to come off for that service too.

    the obvious answer is to take the car back to the technician who did the work on it and have them isolate the noise. there are several things that need to be removed and reinstalled to replace the timing belt and %26quot;new%26quot; rattles are usually caused by something that was reinstalled but not tightened properly. the chances of the idler being the source of your noise are remote. more likely its that a shroud is loose or that you have a new noise that is unrelated to the timing belt (you didn't mention how long between the t-belt and the noise). Rattles on civics are ususally from exhaust heat shields or from deteriorated catalytic converters.

    This is actually not just a way for repair shops to make money. Timing belts are made of fiberglass reinforced rubber. Their life expectency is 60,000. You can stretch that to 75,000. But any longer and who knows. It might last 200,000 it might go on the highway in another 10 miles. The point is at the least, it will leave you stranded, at the most it will bend valves and crack pistons, do to the valves hitting the pistons. Granted most engines now are designed to have a belt snap and not be internally damaged. The older ones weren't. And even now there are a few that will be damaged, by a broken belt.



    The point is, it's a chance that you will have to way. Do you want to spend $400 every 60,000-75,000 miles and know that it's ok or do you opt out and hope for the best?

    If the timing belt breaks, the valves stop where they are. If a valve is open (and there is always at least one valve open), on the next stroke the piston comes up and crunches them causing major engine damage.



    That said my 1970 something Datsun (Nissan) 260Z along with my 1997 Nissan Maxima both have timing chains, not belts. The chains don't (or at least rarely) break. If your Pathfider had a timing chain -- no problemo.



    Manufactures recommend changing your timing belt every 60 -75 k. The belt should last longer (135k would be reasonable under good driving conditions), but the consequences of a failure are so catastrophic, that the manufactures always recommend changing the belts before there is even a small chance they could break.     If that belt broke while the engine was running, you have a 90% chance of having bent valves. The piston to valve clearance in those engines is very small. Any cam timing problems is going to bend some valve heads. Even more likely if you tried to start it after the belt broke.

    engines are different and so the process of changing parts are different. But you can go to autozone .com and look at thier free repair guides for some different cars and get the idea. They do not cover the latest models but from around 1998 and back there are plenty of them.
    your best bet is to go to your auto parts store and pick up a repair manual for your car they usually show you how to take apart everything in your car and how to reinstall them with the right amount of tourque so you dont loose any bolts or nuts and so you dont over tighten anything. the best way to change the timing belt is with the motor out if the car, but if your car has enough room you can do it while the motor is still in, be prepared for getting some tools to remove your drive pully....good luck

    The timing is off a little bit. Sometimes the timing belt stretches a bit after it gets put on (a competent mechanic should know this) and the timing gear is now probably off about a tooth. It won't really hurt the engine, but the engine won't run as smoostly as it should and you won't be able to pass an emissions test with it that way.

What I usually do is set the engine to TDC, and run a paint marker between the belt, and cam pulley. Then take the belt out, transfer the markings to the new belt, and install and verify the alignment after. After the belt installation, take out the spark plugs, put socket over the crank bolt, and spin it to check for valve/piston contact. If you remember to check, there is no way you can damage the engine. (even if you misalign the belt)
    450-600 wth the water pump. parts are probably around 100-150 in a local parts store.
    every 60000 miles, don't chance changing t/belt cos if ya do it wrong it will destroy the whole engine without warning

    I have a August 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer, by now I have already hit 60K do i need to change it? Or how do i check whether it is a rubber belt or chain belt which i Heard chain belt can last longer that I don't need to change at this moment.

    It needs to be replaced every 60K.



    Will it break tomorrow? Probably not. If it does, it will destroy your engine. Is that a chance you want to take? Probably not.

    You most likely have a belt instead of a chain. Check your owners manual or with the dealer. They are usually changed anywhere from 80 to 120K
    I usually change timing belts at 80k 60k is great.



    This is a form of preventive maintenance.



    To prevent failure.



    Belts stretch.



    As well as drive a plastic water pump usually.



    Most imports you have to change the timing belt and water pump at the same time.



    Now if the timing belt fails you will have pistons hit vavles.



    Usually the result is a new engine.
    Sometimes never only if you have trouble. Are you and if not do not worry

    At 100K, I had my 100K tuneup including a timing belt change. After serious issues, another mechanic let me know that my previous mechanic inserted a key incorrectly. The key rubbed down and fell out. My car had major problems at 130K miles. It had trouble getting through the first 3 gears. The previous mechanic paid for another mechanic to fix.     i own a repair shop,and if the second mechanic corrected this ,you may not have any problems from it,but it would pay to be careful in it,i know running one and it out of time isn't good for it,about the only thing id be watching right now would be oil consumption,and any heat rising on it,i have gotten them that was run out of time,and sometimes later on you may get a burnt valve from it,but this is only sometimes,but keep a good eye on it,it can cause valve problems from it,and over heating problems with it,,not to mention the possibility of it maybe blowing a head gasket,but i wouldn't drive around worried about it right now,all you can do is drive it and see,good luck with it,maybe you,ll get lucky,and it will be alright from here on out,hope this help,s.

    Car will run terrible, want to misfire, sound horrible.
    It would not run well. Your timeing chain is exactly that it affects the timeing.
    Well if the timing belt was change incorrectly it would not mess with your transmission. It would probalbly mess with the intake and exhaust valves on the top half of the engine. It can cause major problems with the engine. Some cases you will have to just readjust the valve timing, get a new top half of the engine, or take the head (top half of engine) to a machine shop and have them fix the problem.
    I don't think that the key can be inserted incorrectly. It can only go in one way. If the belt fell off you wouldn't have to worry about shifting gears because the engine wouldn't start. Maybe you've misunderstood what your mechanic is saying. Without a timing belt your engine won't function at all.
    If the current mechanic fixed it correctly you shouldn't have too many problems. The components that turn the timing belt may be damaged but if that was fixed then you have nothing to worry about. If the belt snapped while you were driving that would cause a lot worst problems.
    Impossible to say from you description. If the engine is an interference fit and the key fell out the engine would crash, otherwise just stop running. If the keyway was worn the gear would need to be replaced or re-machined or if it was a key into the crankshaft that would have to be remachined or cleaned up to take a new key. If it were done right, no problem. Your belt might have jumped a notch out of alignment without anything to do with the key.
